nightmare...

The Nightmare (1781) is probably one of Johann Heinrich Füssli's most famous paintings and also one of the most difficult to interpret.
The painting seems to be full of hidden meanings, symbolisms, mythological and folkloric references, images that could relate to good and evil, possession as well as sexuality and erotic aspects of love lost but most importantly, the painting could be a great source for exploring the subconscious and the world of dreams...

One thing is certain, The Nightmare had great influence on several artists, scholars even scientists through the years.
